See this TripWow and more at tripwow.tripadvisor.com Among the ruins of Delos "This morning we had to be up early, have breakfast and be at our meeting point by 7.30am to catch the boat to go on our tour to the island of Delos. This island has been uninhabited since the 7th century AD but the ruins of a thriving community was another great archaeological site of Greek history. It was started to be unearthed in the 18th century and sadly some things were plundered and taken away to other countries. Some are in Italian museums. The island was known as Apollo's place and the inhabitants were never afraid of outsiders because they believed that Apollo would protect them. We were told that it was a multi-cultural society that lived in peace and it wasn't until some warriors (can't remember where from) came and killed all the men and the women and children were taken as slaves. The island was never inhabited again. There is so much history is these places and when we see what has come to light with these excavations it makes us realise that our history in NZ is so very young compared to the thousands of years that exist in these places. In seeing these ruins it is also amazing how advanced these people were in their design, architecture and plumbing.
